Lets talk PCOS

Hello there! I know am writing after freaking 8 months or so. I was not quite sure about me wanting to share something so personal on the internet? And what do I talk about, because PCOS is something, no one takes it seriously. But here I’m for those girls who are facing, fighting every day with hormonal changes and all other things.

Where do I start? Okay, so I was diagnosed with PCOS as I mentioned in my last blog. As it was a very new term for me and my family as well. No one was so serious about it.. even I didn’t care till my obesity and hirsutism started affecting my looks.

Let’s discuss what is PCOS/ PCOD.

What is PCOD?

All women have two ovaries that release an egg alternately every month. The ovaries produce androgens or male hormones in minute quantities. PCOD (Polycystic Ovarian Disease) is a condition where the ovaries release a lot of immature or partially-mature eggs which eventually turn into cysts.

Some of the common symptoms are abdominal weight gain, irregular periods, hair loss and infertility.

What is PCOS?

In women with PCOS (Polycystic Ovary Syndrome), the ovaries produce higher levels of androgen than usual, which interferes with development and release of the eggs. Some of the eggs develop into cysts, which are the little sacs filled with liquid.

How are the two conditions different?

Nature of the condition:
PCOS is a serious condition. PCOD is not considered to be truly a disease since with the right diet and exercise, it can be managed. PCOS, on the other hand, is a metabolic disorder.

Causative factors:
Polycystic Ovary Syndrome is a disorder of the endocrine system, while PCOD is a condition developed by the imbalance of hormones. It is believed that hormonal imbalances and genetics play an essential role in both conditions.

Occurrence:
PCOD is more common in comparison. Almost one-third of women around the globe suffer from Polycystic Ovarian Disease.

i hope this little piece of information would have some how created an awareness about these two ovary disorders

More about PCOS
Poly Cystic Ovarian Syndrome Let me simplify what it means. So everyone has a female hormone (estrogen) and a male hormone (androgen). In females, the amount of estrogen is more compared to androgen and vice versa for males. Now in the case of PCOS in women, ovaries produce an abnormal amount of androgen. And hence we see the side effects such as hirsutism- excess unwanted male-pattern hair growth on a woman’s face, chest, and body. The name polycystic ovary syndrome describes the numerous small cysts (fluid-filled sacs) that form in the ovaries. However, some women with this disorder do not have cysts, while some women without the disorder do develop cysts. It is so complicated right!

You may have studied, Ovulation occurs when a mature egg is released from an ovary. In some cases, a woman doesn’t make enough of the hormones needed to ovulate. When ovulation doesn’t happen, the ovaries can develop many small cysts. These cysts make hormones called androgens. Women with PCOS often have high levels of androgens. This can cause more problems with a woman’s menstrual cycle. And it can cause many of the symptoms of PCOS.

What are the symptoms of PCOS?

  • Missed periods, irregular periods, or very light periods
  • Ovaries that are large or have many cysts
  • Excess body hair, including the chest, stomach (hirsutism)
  • Weight gain, especially around the belly (abdomen)
  • Acne or oily skin
  • Male-pattern baldness or thinning hair
  • Infertility
  • Small pieces of excess skin on the neck or armpits (skin tags)

My Personal Symtoms

I have more symptoms of hirsutism. Don’t even ask. I shave, get waxed, and have to visit the salon twice a month. It feels awkward to see hair popping out from your breast or lower abdomen area. Skin darkening is another symptom I face a lot. I don’t have any acne (touchwood). And excess weight?! Yeah, of course, I am fat. I have belly fat(lower abdomen), got thick thighs, double chin.
I have worked hard to balance my hormones and my lifestyle. I still miss my periods here and there, for example from January 2021 to July 2021 I didn’t miss my periods but last month I had a hectic month. Final exams, submission, no proper diet, and the consequence was- I missed my period!
Anyway here’s a photo I wanted to share. Have a look, hope it motivated you to lose weight
